R2-D2 Clock Concept Art
Posted by Bryan on March 1, 2008 at 04:36 PM CST:

In some cases, "what might have been" can be neater than the items that actually made it to the store shelf and, in this case, I believe these non production clocks fit that bill. This gallery of conceptual artwork of R2-D2 clocks shows decidedly simpler ideas than the electronic droid clock that made it to production from Bradley Time, the licensee for time pieces during the original trilogy. Early licensees tended to shy away from marketing the droids on an individual basis as C-3PO and R2-D2 were almost exclusively marketed as a pair. For an R2 fan this was devastating (and still is) but we can get a glimpse of what should have been!

The first picture shows a conceptual drawing on a translucent paper, almost like tracing paper. The image itself is in pen and acrylic and shows a simple clock, either wind up or battery operated, with minute, hour and second hands. The Bradley Time property stamp can clearly be seen in the left hand corner and some internal nomenclature can be seen in the right hand corner. The close up picture shows the incredible detail and shading the artist employed in this relatively small piece - the actual R2 clock image is no larger than 3 inches high. The dome appears to be a three dimensional part of the clock while the body would have been printed onto the clock face.

In addition, thanks to the diligent work of Chris Fawcett (12back.com), we can view other conceptual R2 clocks that never quite made it to the production stage (image used by permission of Chris Fawcett of The Star Wars Collectors Archive). This image of six clocks, all with three dimensional bodies and different printed clock faces, is a fantastic image that currently resides in a private collection.
